Networking events are all the range in the professional community. It seems like there is always an up-and-coming networking event somewhere in the area, but do these events really help further your connections? At UARF we host eight events a year, and as that person at the check-in table that watches everyone from afar, I have some thoughts on networking events and why you should try one out if you haven't yet.

Thrive in a focused environment
Networking events are created for people to meet others with similar interests or professional goals. This focused environment means you can meet like-minded individuals or potential collaborators. We love to hear people walk away with papers filled with contacts of people who can help them out and of people they can lend some advice to! It means the event is serving the purpose and we love to see just that.

Everyone is there to chat

Unlike some social situations where it might be awkward or difficult to go up to new people, networking events exist just so you can make conversation. Everyone is there with the intention of meeting new people, which makes for easier introductions and may calm your nerves a bit. We have even seen conversations start in the middle of the snack line, so just make sure to step away and bring your conversation away from the treats while you do your networking. I know it’s exciting, but we have some pretty great snacks at our events so don’t keep the line waiting.

Use this as a time personal growth
Networking events offer opportunities for personal growth and self-improvement. Events like this challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and expand your social circle. It’s also good to do some early prep work like practicing or making an elevator pitch, preparing business cards or handouts, and being ready to carry conversation.

Just have fun!
Mixers are also just a good time! I like to watch people come into the mixer and start chatting away immediately, we usually have to pull them aside to even check-in and give them a name tag.

I know I say this as one of the hosts of the event, but networking events truly do create a space for people to get out of the office and have a good time, while still being in a professional setting. I’ve seen great connections being made, conversations that last well beyond the end of the event, lots of smiles and laughs all from my check-in table. So I hope you will join us for our next Innovators Club mixer on August 8th. I hope to see you there from the check-in table.
