Addressing 7 Areas of Wellbeing to Feel Refreshed

Have you ever felt tired,
in spite of getting a good night’s sleep? Or felt lacking in energy right after a long weekend away from work? It turns out that time away and sleep are only a portion of the rest we need to avoid running ourselves into burnout mode. To truly recuperate from daily stress, entrepreneurs should be addressing the seven different aspects of wellbeing.

1. Physical:
Most adults should be getting 7+ hours of sleep each night to relieve physical stress. Getting less than this can build up a sleep deficit, leading to lower physical and mental performance.  It turns out, sleeping in on weekends
probably doesn’t make up for it either. To improve physical rest, try building a schedule that accounts for at least 7 hours of sleep each night, and commit to the routine nightly; it can take several days to reset your sleep cycle. Stretching and getting a massage can also assist in improving physical wellbeing.

2. Mental:
Mental health is often strained by keeping too many thoughts in your head at once. Reduce some of that stress by writing down task lists or reference notes so you don’t have to pull everything from memory. Compartmentalize your work at the end of a day with a “shut down” routine to halt any carry-over thinking that may be spoiling your recuperation time. Avoid constant mental multitasking by setting aside time to meditate to slow down your overall thinking process. It will take effort to train yourself to stop being in “problem solver mode” 24/7 but seeking counseling or therapy can help develop tools that will work for you.

3. Social: To secure your social wellbeing, you should first distinguish between your required versus elective social obligations. Understand how those required interactions demand your energy and try to balance with the elective ones. Some friends or family give you energy, while others need you to provide energy. Make sure your interactions are in balance, and potentially block out time to be alone to rebuild your social energy(shoutout to introverts!).

4. Spiritual: All people have some level of “spirituality” whether through practicing religion or ceremonial worship, or just believing in personal values that guide daily choices. Tailoring efforts based on your belief system, there are plenty of option to participate in volunteerism or community service to be a part of a greater good. Even small acts of kindness towards a stranger can boost your esteem and help find that internal, spiritual sense of revitalization. Building a better community and leading by example in your daily routines can also increase your spiritual wellbeing.

5. Sensory
:
Let’s face it, most of us are overstimulated in our day to day lives. Taking a break from screens, putting limits on social media scrolling, and sitting in silence for even a short period can help relax our senses. Try listening to soothing music or lighting a scented candle with your eyes closed for 15 minutes to get a sensory reset.

6. Emotional:
Strain on your emotional wellbeing stems from feeling like you can’t be authentic in expressing yourself. Spend time around others who allow you to be comfortably and fully yourself. Allow yourself to be vulnerable from time to time when you would otherwise show tension or restraint in trying to maintain a certain outward image. When it comes to authenticity, the more you practice it, in small doses to start, the more your emotional wellbeing will improve.

7. Creative:
Getting stuck in routine or laser-focused on productivity harms your creative energy. Engaging with nature or art that inspires you can be a first step in rebuilding that energy. Taking up hobbies or side-projects for your own fulfillment can lead to more creative thinking in other aspects of your life, too. Try to avoid turning creative activities into competitive outlets and placing judgement on the outcomes. No matter what you do to express yourself, use positive self-thoughts to affirm your efforts in building creative wellbeing.

All seven areas interact with one another and have plenty of overlap. It’s hard to tackle all of them at once, so begin by focusing on two or three where you have the biggest deficits to start. Entrepreneurs can often neglect their wellbeing, so do a check-in with yourself on which aspects you need to address. Eventually, you’ll find a way to bring balance to all areas on a weekly basis and feel ready to take on each day fully refreshed.
