Networking events are starting to make a comeback and there are so many out there to choose from.
These events can help you level up your community connections and open some new doors for you. Most events are free, so it is hard to say no to an evening of conversation and community.

Here are some tips for networking and how you get the most value out of the next event you go to.

Know your goals
Before attending a networking event, decide what you would like to get out of this particular event. All events are different, some are geared towards different industries, so know what kind of space you will be in and what you would like to get out of each event. Are you trying to establish new business connections, seek potential job opportunities, or gain industry insights? By setting clear goals, you can focus your efforts and ensure that your interactions will be valuable to you.

Prepare an Elevator Pitch
Refresh your elevator pitch so you can quickly share what you do, who you are, and any other info. You’ll want people to know about you or your work so you can connect with the right people for you. I like to practice my spiel out loud so when the day comes and I’m in a busy and crowded space I can confidently say what I need to and not leave anything out.

Networking does not stop when you leave
When you leave the event, that does not mean the networking is done. Follow up with the contacts you made after the event. Send personalized emails or messages saying how nice it was to meet them and if you can, reference specific points from your conversation to remind them why you connected. Timely and thoughtful follow-ups showcase your professionalism and help to establish connections.

Engage in Active Listening
Actively listen to speakers, ask questions about the topic being discussed, and engage in meaningful conversations. It’s also a great look when you show interest in others’ perspectives and experiences and let them do most of the talking. Doing this could show your engagement and enthusiasm.

Be Yourself
Be true to yourself, express genuine interest in others, and share your experiences openly. If you are an introvert and not one for social events, think about sharing that! Tell them, “I am not normally one to come out for events like this, but I wanted to challenge myself and meet some new people”, and you just may learn others feel that way too and you can bond with them on that common ground!

Networking events can help you grow your community, put names to faces, level up your connections in the network, and get some great bites like we have at UARF events! Before you head out the door, remember to set some goals, prepare to meet others, and just be yourself and you will make the most of these events.
